Unique Student Identifier (USI) passes through the senate.
The Minister for Industry, the Hon Ian Macfarlane MP, has announced the passage of the Student Identifiers Act 2014 through the Senate.
The Senate has passed the Student Identifiers Bill 2014 paving the way for the Unique Student Identifier scheme to start on 1 January 2015. From this date, students will be able to apply for their unique number and training providers will be supplying updated information to the national vocational education and training (VET) data collection.
The scheme will commence in 2015 and transcripts will be available in 2016.
The USI scheme will provide a national online authenticated record of students’ training attainment and will serve as a building block for a range of vocational education and training reforms. Students, industry, training providers and governments will benefit from the scheme, which will streamline access to, and exchange of student training records.
Over time, the ability of students to access and share their training records will make enrolment processes more efficient for training providers and students. Training providers will have access to an online information source to manage student transfers between training providers, and the assessment of credit transfer and pre-requisites. For more information on the USI, visit the Department of Industry’s website here.
The Department of Industry will work with training providers and key stakeholders over the coming months to assist with preparation for implementation.
