India announces new visa rules

Tourists travelling to India from 43 countries, including Australia, the U.S., Brazil, Germany, Japan and Russia will no longer have to queue at their local consulates to obtain visas. Tourists from countries will now be able to apply online to get an electronic travel authorisation within 72 hours.

Under the scheme, tourists will be able to pick up their visas from nine Indian airports – Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad and Goa. Tourists can apply twice a year for 30-day visas, which cannot be extended. Tourists must also have a return ticket.

Union Minister of State for Tourism and Culture, Mr. Mahesh Sharma, said that the system would have positive impact on the economy. The implementation of Tourist Visa on arrival enabled with electronic travel authorisation will send a clear and powerful message that India is serious in making travel to the country easy, the Minister said.
