Australian Education Budget 2015-2016 Overview

The federal budget announced on Tuesday night does not contain a lot of new initiatives for the higher education and training sectors with most ‘reforms’ announced in the 2014 budget. Points to note include:

The government will push ahead with its higher education proposals despite being rejected in the Senate earlier his year. ACPET Association will continue to advocate for the measures that would extend Commonwealth support to students enrolled with non-university providers and the elimination of the 25% administration fee payable by these students accessing FEE HELP

The continued roll out of the Industry Skills Fund that provides $664 over five years. The ISF provides a real opportunity for VET providers to work with industry to deliver training solutions that are flexible and tailored to business and student/learner needs

Given the recent problems with VET FEE HELP the government has allocated $18.2 million to support the measures recently announced by Minister Birmingham to restore confidence in the program

$68 million in increased funding for the Australian Skills Quality Authority to boost its efforts to regulate the VET sector

At risk young job seekers will receive increased support through the $212 million Youth Employment Strategy. This initiative includes funding for community-based organisations to provide the skills that are vital to securing a place in the workforce, and

Cuts of $12.7 million to international education support programs and increases in student visa charges.
